2024 Opening Drive
Always a fun day - the Opening Drive this Sunday was over subscribed - and for the first time that I can remember - we had 56 players (14 teams of 4) on the green. We even had reserves on the sidelines hoping for a game. Despite the cold wind, it stayed dry and the laughter kept us warm anyway. We had a 'ploughmans' for lunch with a glass of wine - all organised and prepared by Marian and Pat - thank you. It was also a good chance for people to catch up as many had not been to the Club since last September. We just had enough tables for over 60 seated .....
Then it was out to the Green - and I must say how wonderful it all looked - the greenkeeping team have done a great job over the winter break. First it was the 'SPIDER' - which we had to do twice as we had a premature first attempt with some bowlers still in the club house !! The closest award went to Marilyn who skillfully positioned her bowl yards away and waited for the big yellow jack to get knocked in her direction.
Then onto the game proper. Vicky and Marilyn had managed to even up the teams magnificantly as the final scores were all very close. Although my team threw our lead away by losing 14 shots in the last three ends (unforgiveable - but good thing it was all for fun). At the end of 18 cold ends, the winners (after countback) were : Paul Mc, Mary M, Pauline C, and Ted R - congratulations to them. Then it was back into the clubhouse for hot teas/coffees or drinks from the bar - thanks to Eric, Mary and Wendy for controlling the crush.
A fantastic start to the season.
