2023 Opening Drive
So the rain held off and we had a great opening drive on St George's Day - what could be more traditional than a game of lawn bowls. All 6 rinks were full (48 players) with many bowling outdoors for the first time since September 2022.
We started with a cheese and wine snack (thank you Marian, Pat, Steve and Ted) served out promptly at 1pm. The wine certainly helped give confidence that the long jacks could be reached....... Then it was a social chit chat amongst those members not back in the Clubhouse since last summer.
Down to the serious business of the 'spider'. So with one foot in the ditch and at the sound of the bell - we all bowled our favourite wood to try and get nearest to the football in the middle. After some skilful bowling (and a lot of luck) - the wine was won by Diane. Onto the opening drive. The teams had been picked in advance (some confusion as some members had put their name down twice !!) - but eventually nicely balanced teams entered the fray. The final scores showed how well the teams were chosen as there wasn't much in it.
The 16 ends went quickly with a good deal of laughter on the green - and then it was back into the clubhouse for the announcement. Vicky and Peter thanked the volunteers (Eric and team behind the bar, Marian and team for the food) and of course a big thank you to Vicky and Marilyn for organising the event.
So the winning team was Martin, Moira, Roland and Ray - who won a club pen each. A lovely day and a nice start to the season.
