Dorking Bowling Club Hosts Inaugural Abbeyfield Trophy

On Friday 5 September, Dorking Bowling Club proudly hosted the very first Abbeyfield Trophy Tournament – a friendly competition designed to strengthen ties with neighbouring bowling clubs.

Our Chairman Ray Smith invited Clubs from Pippbrook, Bookham, and Brockham to join Dorking, with each entering two mixed triples teams. Taking place at the close of the outdoor 2025 season, with league matches largely completed, the day struck the perfect balance of relaxed camaraderie and competitive spirit. With so many players already familiar with one another, every fine bowl was applauded – whether it came from a teammate or a friendly rival.

A Day of Skill, Smiles and Sunshine

The weather played its part beautifully, ensuring smiles all round. Each team played 9 ends, followed by another 9 against new opponents on different rinks, giving spectators the chance to watch plenty of high-quality play.

Competition was tight, and when the scores were tallied, Chris Morris and Martin Saull had their work cut out. After double-checking the numbers – and even going to a second decider – the result was confirmed.

The top two teams had won 3.5 games, but the overall winners were Pippbrook Bowling Club, edging out Bookham with 37 shots to 29. The official presentation was made by Iain Looms, Abbeyfield’s Marketing and PR Manager, who also shared some words about Abbeyfield Wey Valley Society and its important work in the local community.

The day concluded with the presentation of the shiny new Abbeyfield Trophy and their delicious buffet was enjoyed by all. There was unanimous agreement that this was a thoroughly enjoyable occasion, and with hopes expressed for it to become an annual tradition, Dorking Bowling Club looks forward to welcoming even more local teams in the years ahead.

Thanks to all that made it happen.
