Over £600 raised at Captains Rainbow Trust for Children Charity bowls event
A full day of entertainment greeted the Club members who had signed up for the Captains [Diane and Trevor] Charity Event. The theme was 'be colourful' and many dazzled [?] in their best Caribbean styles. Friends and family were invited to the morning session where they could try their hand at bowls and also some fun activities for the younger ones. There were some good techniques on display - hopefully leading to becoming future members

Probably the main morning attraction was the BBQ where we were treated to sumptious burgers, sausages, chicken and various salad mixes. We really have to thank Diane and her family [daughters Isabel and Megan with their partners Mark and Peter] for organising, cooking and creating the Braai - which is more than a BBQ and a cultural institution in South Africa with the bringing together of friends and a shared experience. The food was plentiful and I am not sure how people then managed to get up and play bowls in the afternoon. Oonagh Goodman from the Rainbow Trust for Children said a few words about the Charity and its work since 1986 - thanking us for our support. Many people did not know that its founder Bernadette Cleary is our very own Marian's sister - good deeds obviously runs in the family.
So onto the silly bowls afternoon. Trevor had devised some devious ends for the twelve triples teams to navigate ranging from wrong hand bowling to delivering jacks after the team has bowled !! ..... and all touchers counted. It was frustrating but great fun with just a few bowls going into the wrong rinks. Some substitutions were made at the half way mark and rinks changed to give more people the chance to join in. Then guess what - more food. We were treated to some South African desserts with cream. Trevor announced the winning team - which just happened to be Trevor, Jane B and Sheila G. No prize, just the kudos of being the best on the day. The big raffle came next with 'hunt the dinosaur' [25 envelopes with four containing cash prizes]. Nearly all envelopes had to be opened before the last prize was won.
So a fantastic fun day at the Club with lots of laughter and good spirit. A huge thank you to our Captains - Trevor and Diane and all the helpers on the day. A lovely amount of money to go to the Rainbow Trust with thanks going to all that contibuted.
